Madeline Payne is the 2024-2025 Hook, Line & Science Communication Fellow. She will work alongside Sea Grant fisheries specialists to communicate research to anglers and others through North Carolina Sea Grant’s award-winning Hook, Line & Science series.
Payne is a Ph.D. student in the Environment, Ecology, and Energy Program at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Her background includes a Bachelor of Biological Science and a Bachelor of World Languages: Chinese from Southern Methodist University and experience researching North Carolina’s fisheries and fisheries habitats.
Since 2018, North Carolina Sea Grant fisheries specialists Scott Baker and Sara Mirabilio have curated content for Hook, Line, & Science, publishing more than 240 lay-friendly summaries of research of interest to saltwater anglers for the popular weekly series.
“We are excited to work with Madeline,” says Baker. “Having great communication skills is a foundation for being an effective scientist — and this fellowship provides practical writing experience in spades.”
Payne’s fellowship is a year-long assignment in which she will seek out and obtain research articles to write summaries that distill the latest fishery and fish-related research.
“It’s essential that scientists learn how to communicate their research to the public to improve the impact and influence of their ideas more broadly in society,” says Mirabilio.
Payne’s first piece for Hook, Line & Science covered the effects of seagrass restoration on fish.
“This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding,” she says. “I am excited to contribute to making the latest fisheries research more accessible.”
