North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for the 2025 Hook, Line & Science Communication Fellowship until 5 p.m. ET on June 2, 2025. This fellowship will provide a current or recent graduate student from a North Carolina college or university with a one-year opportunity to communicate fisheries science to anglers and the public through North Carolina Sea Grant’s award-winning Hook, Line & Science series.
Since 2018, North Carolina Sea Grant fisheries specialists Scott Baker and Sara Mirabilio have curated content for Hook, Line, & Science, publishing more than 275 lay-friendly summaries of research of interest to saltwater anglers with the popular weekly series.
“This fellowship will provide great experience for a science communicator to work through a well-established platform,” says Baker. “Hook, Line & Science reaches tens of thousands of readers annually, online and in print, through a wide variety of outlets.”
For the past year, Madeline Payne has served as the Hook, Line & Science Communications Fellow.
“Serving as a Hook, Line & Science fellow has strengthened my ability to communicate thoughtfully and clearly,” says Payne, a Ph.D. student in the Environment, Ecology, and Energy Program at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. “This experience taught me how to turn complex fisheries research into clear, engaging stories, and it transformed the way I approach sharing my own work beyond the scientific community.”
Mirabilio says the $3,000 fellowship will start in July and run for one year.
“The Hook, Line & Science Communication Fellow will look for research articles of interest to anglers and use a template to create lay-friendly summaries of the work,” she explains. “The fellow’s writing also will be eligible for publication in the award-winning Coastwatch magazine.”
Each applicant will provide a writing sample tailored for Hook, Line & Science. More information and application instructions are here.
