NC STEM Policy Fellows Begin Duties at Statewide Agencies

North Carolina’s newest STEM Policy Fellows are starting their year-long assignments in high-level state government offices. Now in its third year, the fellowship is an opportunity for recent graduate students to explore in-state, non-academic career options in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

NOAA and Sea Grant have announced their finalists for the 2023 class of the Sea Grant John A. Knauss Policy Fellowship program, named after John A. Knauss, who founded the National Sea Grant program and served as administrator of the NOAA.

NC Coastal Research Fellows Announced

Madison Lytle and Andrew McMains will be the 2022 North Carolina Coastal Research Fellows. Their research will look at reduced water clarity’s influence on seagrass growth; and the effects of dredging on inlet-inhabiting fish, respectively.

ShellCast App Helps Growers Forecast Harvest Closures

Recently, a team of engineers and computer scientists at NC State University worked with key partners to create ShellCast, an online application for predicting temporary shellfish lease closures. Lease closures are issued by the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries as the result of storm runoff polluting coastal waters and potentially contaminating shellfish, which can lead to illness if consumed. The project funding included North Carolina Sea Grant.
