Coastwatch Features a Mystery Shipwreck, Alligators Battling PFAS, and New Ricky Moore Videos

In "The Mystery Ship Off Pappy Lane," India Mackinson's cover story looks at how science and sleuthing uncovered the history of a 58-year-old shipwreck. Weeks of diving and mapping revealed a ship that had found its way from the turbulence of the Pacific Ocean to its final resting place at the bottom of the shallow, murky Pamlico Sound. Just one of many great stories in the Spring issue.

North Carolina Sea Grant Advances Shoreline Protection and Coastal Resilience

NOAA’s National Sea Grant College Program and the U.S. Coastal Research Program (USCRP) are backing new work to protect North Carolina’s shorelines. A North Carolina Sea Grant collaboration with East Carolina University and Carteret Community College will develop a framework for coastal protection design and siting, as well as living shoreline training courses and a certification program.

North Carolina Sea Grant is now accepting preproposals for the 2024–2026 applied research grant cycle to address problems affecting coastal ecosystems, economies, and communities. The deadline for preproposals is January 13, 2023.

Applications Open for Joint NC Sea Grant/NC Space Grant Graduate Research Fellowship

North Carolina’s Space Grant and Sea Grant programs are currently accepting applications for Graduate Research Fellowships for the 2023-2024 academic year. Two fellowships of up to $10,000 may be awarded to students whose projects address a priority research need within the state’s nearshore environments, coastal areas, watersheds or human activities in these areas.
