Joint Sea Grant/DMF Fellow Begins Appointment

Liza Hoos, the 2014 North Carolina Sea Grant/N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries joint fellow, recently began her assignment. In collaboration with DMF, she will estimate bycatch “hot spots” using fishery-independent and -dependent data.

“Bycatch is an important issue in marine and estuarine fisheries,” says Jeff Buckel, fellowship coordinator and a faculty member at North Carolina State University. “We are excited to have Liza apply her spatial analytical expertise to bycatch questions — and I am confident that she will gain valuable experience in the complexities of fisheries management in North Carolina.”

Hoos has a master’s degree in environmental management from Duke University. Her research applies geospatial analysis to marine conservation issues, with a goal of developing and determining management solutions. In particular, she uses habitat models to focus on identifying the distribution and essential habitat of marine species.

“Research is too often removed from its real-world applications, so I am extremely excited to have been given this opportunity to conduct research that can be applied directly to marine fisheries issues in North Carolina,” she says.

Hailing from Nashville, Tenn., Hoos also holds an undergraduate degree in physical geography from McGill University in Montreal.

This fellowship, based in Morehead City, is patterned after the national Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship. The projects provide a professional education and training opportunity to the fellow, and assist the state on marine fisheries management concerns.
