The North Carolina Sentinel Site Cooperative and North Carolina Sea Grant are accepting applications for the 2017 North Carolina Sea-Level Rise Education and Communications Fellowship.

“We are excited to provide this opportunity for students to consider how scientific information can be used in classrooms and communities to increase environmental literacy on important topics,” notes John Fear, Sea Grant’s deputy director and current chair of the cooperative’s advisory board.

Graduate students in good academic standing attending an accredited N.C. college or university may propose projects of up to $10,000 to meet needs identified within the cooperative’s implementation plan. Work must be completed by Sept. 30, 2018.

Applicants must identify one of two tracks to address climate, sea-level rise, or coastal inundation impacts on coastal communities or coastal habitats:

  • K-12 Education: Working with teachers to create N.C. science standards-based lesson plans and activities.
  • Communications: Developing and distributing science-based information products tailored for coastal residents and/or businesses.

The national Sea Grant and Sentinel Site networks each receive funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Inclusion and use of NOAA tools and resources within proposed activities is strongly encouraged. These could include but are not limited to: NOAA Tides and Currents, NOAA Digital Coast, NOAA Sea-Level Rise Viewer, N.C. King Tides, and What’s your water level?.

Proposals must include an outreach/dissemination plan and comprehensive methods to evaluate the success of the project. Fellowship funding must be managed by the student’s major professor.

For more information on proposal requirements, go to: https://ncseagrant.ncsu.edu/funding-opps/fellowships/.

Proposals are due by 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 1, 2017. They are to be sent via email to Jennifer Dorton, cooperative coordinator, at dortonj@uncw.edu.
