New Guide to N.C. Coastal Landscaping Available at Green & Growin’ Event

A handy new landscaping guide to native plants of North Carolina has been published by the Coastal Landscapes Initiative, a collaboration that includes North Carolina Sea Grant. The 48-page guide will be available at the Sea Grant booth at the upcoming Green & Growin’ event next week in Greensboro, N.C.
Green & Growin’ attracts thousands of horticulture and landscape professionals each year. Registered attendees can earn or maintain licensing credentials, find top products and build solid business connections. Sea Grant’s booth will be part of the G&G Marketplace — an industry trade show — open on Thursday, Jan. 17, and Friday, Jan. 18, at the Greensboro Coliseum.
“We created this guide for anyone on the coast who wants to enhance their gardening or landscaping efforts,” says Jane Harrison, North Carolina Sea Grant’s coastal economics specialist and a member of the Coastal Landscapes Initiative team.
Through full-color photographs and concise descriptions, the plant guide features 34 species that stand out as all-stars — that is, they are native to the N.C. coastal region, visually attractive and versatile. Each profile includes details on unique traits and growing conditions, such as salt tolerance and soil requirements.
The guide is divided into color-coded sections on trees, shrubs, vines, grasses and flowering perennials. Common names and scientific names are included, along with a list of references.
A companion brochure highlights the same 34 plants, and includes identifying photographs. Free digital versions of both products are available at go.ncsu.edu/CoastalLandscapes.
“A lot of thought and discussion went into selecting plants that are attractive, hardy and environmentally beneficial,” says Gloria Putnam, North Carolina Sea Grant’s coastal resources and community specialist, who also is a member of the Coastal Landscapes Initiative team. “We hope our guide gives professionals and property owners at the coast confidence that these are solid choices for our landscapes and worthy of a place in the market.”
The Coastal Landscapes Initiative is a multi-partner effort to address landscaping at every stage of the process, from planning and design to installation and management. Partners come from the public and private sectors and draw on a range of N.C. coastal landscaping expertise. The CLI fosters coastal landscapes that are beautiful, functional, manageable and environmentally friendly.
