North Carolina Sea Grant is accepting applications for the 2017–2019 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Coastal Management Fellowship program.

The two-year fellowship provides professional, on-the-job education and training in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students.

Work starts Aug. 1, 2017 and offers an annual salary of $34,000. Fellows also will receive health insurance, worker’s compensation, relocation reimbursement and travel reimbursement.

Students completing a master’s, doctoral or professional degree in natural resource management or environmental-related studies between Jan. 1, 2016, and July 31, 2017, at an accredited college or university in North Carolina are eligible for nomination by North Carolina Sea Grant. United States citizenship is not a requirement, but interest in state-level coastal issues is a must.

Kimberly Hernandez, 2014 Coastal Management Fellow from North Carolina, recently highlighted her opportunities and experiences during her placement at the Chesapeake and Coastal Service in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. She now is a coastal resources planner with that organization.

Applications through North Carolina Sea Grant must be completed by 5 p.m., Jan. 20, 2017, through the eSeaGrant portal: go.ncsu.edu/ncesg.

All applications must include:

  • Resume or curriculum vitae, not to exceed two pages using 12-point font.
  • Statement of the applicant’s goals, 500 words or less, with emphasis on what the applicant expects from and can contribute to the fellowship experience.
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from the applicant’s principal professor. If no principal professor exists, the faculty member who is most familiar with the applicant’s academic work may be substituted.
  • Unofficial copies of all undergraduate and graduate student transcripts.

Successful applicants will be invited for face-to-face interviews Feb. 7 and 8, 2017, in Raleigh. North Carolina Sea Grant can nominate up to three candidates to the NOAA Office of Coastal Management for final selection.

For more information, contact John Fear, Sea Grant deputy director, at 919-515-9104 or jmfear@ncsu.edu. More details about the fellowship are available at www.coast.noaa.gov/fellowship.
