North Carolina Sea Grant has published a list of educational resources to complement homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The list includes articles and hands-on activities about coastal flora, fauna and phenomena.

“North Carolina Sea Grant has always been committed to educating the public about our coast,” says marine education specialist Terri Kirby Hathaway. “With students across the nation home from school, we wanted to provide easy access to resources that will keep kids learning during this difficult time.”

They cover an array of topics, including common N.C. sharks, maritime forest habitat and ocean tides. Adults may wish to read these pieces to youngsters, while older kids will enjoy perusing the pages on their own.

The new resource page also includes more formal curricula, including a set of lesson plans on marine aquaculture, as well as classic educational activities from the 1970s and 80s.

“These ‘oldies but goodies’ have withstood the test of time,” says Hathaway. “They encourage problem-solving and discussion essential to building skills in science, technology, engineering and math.”
