North Carolina Sea Grant again will host the North Carolina Coastal Conference. The event will be held Nov. 19 and 20, 2019, at the Hotel Ballast in downtown Wilmington.
“By funding research and supporting outreach, our program provides information and resources to assist state efforts to respond to, recover from and anticipate urgent and long-term coastal challenges,” notes Susan White, Sea Grant executive director. “For example, many North Carolina communities that were still feeling effects from Hurricane Matthew in 2016 were hit again last year by Hurricane Florence and Tropical Storm Michael.”
Drawing upon the success of similar conferences in 2015 and 2017, the sessions will include a range of important topics relevant to North Carolina.
Researchers and students, along with community, nonprofit and industry representatives are encouraged to submit proposals for coastal topic discussions. Proposal submissions can have various formats: oral presentation, poster presentation or an alternative presentation style.
Subjects can range from science and education to arts and humanities, incorporating both research and outreach. Topics can include but are not limited to:
- weather, storms and climate;
- community and ecosystem health;
- fisheries and aquaculture; and
- planning and economics.
To submit proposals, visit: go.ncsu.edu/ncesg. Abstracts must be received by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2019.
Experts also will lead interdisciplinary sessions designed to bring together diverse perspectives. These include:
- Opening and closing sessions
- Concurrent panels based on submitted abstracts
- Poster competition for students
- Evening networking event on Nov. 19
Registration and other details, will be available soon. Check ncseagrant.org for updates. Also watch for the hashtag #NCCoastConf on social media for updated information.
