North Carolina Sea Grant and the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership (APNEP) are accepting applications for the 2024 Graduate Fellowship in Estuarine Research. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2024.
The fellowship provides funding for graduate students based in North Carolina with an opportunity to conduct applied research within the North Carolina portion of the APNEP management area.
“APNEP is excited to once again partner with North Carolina Sea Grant to advance estuarine science in the region through this fellowship opportunity,” says Tim Ellis, APNEP’s quantitative ecologist. “Over the years, our graduate research fellows have conducted novel studies that inform the conservation and management of the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuarine System.”
Aman Kohli, North Carolina Sea Grant’s research and program coordinator, notes that this fellowship provides an invaluable opportunity for students to engage in impactful research that supports the management of North Carolina’s estuarine ecosystems. “Enhancing the link between academia and real-world applications is a significant benefit of this fellowship for both funding partners.”
Graduate students must propose hypothesis-based research that addresses one or more of the following broad focus areas:
- Estuary Spatial Planning
- Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
- Coastal Water Quality
- Ecological Flows
- Wetlands
- Innovative Technologies and Approaches
Proposed work should relate to the APNEP Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan and to North Carolina Sea Grant’s Strategic Plan, as well as demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion aligned with the visions of Sea Grant and APNEP.
The fellowship strongly encourages proposals from graduate students of all backgrounds and abilities.
The fellowship is $10,000. Complete instructions, including more information on focus areas for these proposals, are available on the fellowship page.
All applications must be completed by 5 p.m. on November 15 through the eSeaGrant portal: go.ncsu.edu/ncesg.
