North Carolina’s Sea Grant and Space Grant programs are now accepting applications for a joint, one-year Graduate Research Fellowship. This $10,000 fellowship will be awarded to one graduate student, whose work addresses a high-priority research need within North Carolina’s coastal areas, watersheds and nearshore environment. Applications are due April 1.
The fellow will use data from vast archives and remote-sensing capabilities available through the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support their research.
The joint fellowship offers funding for interdisciplinary proposals from across the state. “We strongly encourage proposals from graduate students at HBCUs and MSIs and/or from traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities, as well as from graduate students who can demonstrate how their work and related outreach will benefit underserved and underrepresented communities,” notes Jobi Cook, North Carolina Space Grant’s associate director.
Research must be supervised by a faculty member. The start date can vary, but must be after June 1, 2022. All work must be completed by May 31, 2023.
The fellow will have the opportunity to present their research findings at a meeting or conference among peer researchers and other audiences, such as the annual NC Space Symposium, hosted by NC Space Grant, and North Carolina Sea Grant’s intermittent N.C. Coastal Conference.
Required qualifications include:
- Applicant must be a full-time, enrolled graduate student at an accredited college or university within North Carolina.
- Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
Application Deadline: 5 p.m., Friday, April 1, 2022.
