Coastwatch, North Carolina Sea Grant’s magazine, has received an APEX Award for Publication Excellence. This honor highlights exceptional efforts in many areas of publications.
The Summer 2015 issue of Coastwatch was recently recognized in the Green Magazines, Journals, and Tabloids category.
The issue’s cover story focused on North Carolina’s coastal state parks, for the 100th anniversary of the legislation that established them. In addition, Sea Grant fellow Shannon Brown wrote about her research on summer soundscapes — the collection of sounds from biological, physical and human sources — in the Rachel Carson Reserve.
In other articles, writers highlighted Sea Grant-funded rip current research; unique maritime forests throughout the coast; and the water-monitoring efforts of students at First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, led by science teacher Katie Neller.
“It makes us very proud to receive this award again,” notes Katie Mosher, North Carolina Sea Grant communications director. “The green award reflects the contribution that the magazine has had across the state, as well as beyond North Carolina. We’re honored.”
The Sea Grant communications team also includes Sandra Harris, circulations manager; E-Ching Lee, managing editor; and Diana Hackenburg, science writer/editor.
Mariner’s Menu blogger Vanda Lewis; interns Rebecca Nagy, Nichole Riddle and Cynthia Sharpe; and several freelancers also contributed to the winning issue. The magazine is designed by Linda Noble.
