NC Sea Grant Offers Fisheries Science Course

Two fisheries specialists at North Carolina Sea Grant with over 40 years of combined experience are offering a new round of their popular course that explores fisheries science with a focus on topics related to management. Registration is now open for Scott Baker and Sara Mirabilio’s “Introductory Fisheries Science for Fishermen.”

“The course is another high-level overview of fisheries science, with examples specific to our state,” Baker says. “We’re excited to offer the course again, this time in the southern part of the state.”

“Introductory Fisheries Science for Fishermen” will include four weekly classes available online and on the UNCW campus.

Susan White, executive director of North Carolina Sea Grant, says the sessions are in response to feedback about fishing stakeholders’ interests.

“Scott Baker and Sara Mirabilio continue to seek opportunities to engage and educate fishers and interested community members regarding commercial and recreational fishing efforts in North Carolina,” White says. “Developed in partnership with experts from across the state, the course brings the latest science and management information to the table in an approachable and applicable manner for anyone who wants to expand their own role in these topics.”

Baker, who will discuss data collection for fisheries science, says anyone taking the course online or in person will have the opportunity to learn from highly knowledgeable instructors.

“Academic experts include Fred Scharf and Martin Posey from UNC Wilmington and Jeff Buckel and Jie Cao from NC State,” Baker says. “Presenters with perspectives from management agencies include Laura Lee from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), as well as Jess Hawkins of Crystal Coast Ecotours, who is retired from DMF.”

The course will run four weeks on Tuesday nights, Feb. 11 through March 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Participants can attend classes at UNCW’s Teaching Lab Building on main campus next to the Student Recreation Center. Or, they can take the course as a webinar online.

The $20 course fee is the same regardless of whether registrants choose a virtual or traditional classroom setting. Enrollment is limited for both formats and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
