NOAA Announces New Digital Coast Fellow from North Carolina

NOAA’s Coastal Management and Digital Coast Fellowship Program offers on-the-job training for postgraduate students in coastal resource management and policy. Anna Jane Jones soon will start a new fellowship: to work with The Nature Conservancy to plan and implement nature-based solutions to reduce risk in the Florida Panhandle and the Carolinas Coastal Plain. Both regions recently have seen significant effects from hurricanes.

Jones comes to the fellowship with a master’s in city and regional planning from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In addition, she holds a bachelor’s in art history and the visual arts from Occidental College. She will start her fellowship in August.

John Fear, deputy director of North Carolina Sea Grant, says, “We are extremely thrilled that Anna Jane will bring her planning skills to the Nature Conservancy in support of their risk reduction and recovery efforts in North Carolina and Florida.”

For the fellowship, North Carolina Sea Grant recruits and nominates students attending universities in the state. NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management manages the fellowship program, including matching finalists with state and jurisdictional coastal zone programs, and other key NOAA partner organizations who are members of the Digital Coast partnership team to work on specific projects.
