The Fall 2024 issue of North Carolina Sea Grant’s award-winning Coastwatch magazine explores the catastrophic power of Hurricane Helene

The print edition of the Fall issue was already at press when Helene devastated western North Carolina, but the NC State Climate Office’s Corey Davis provides context for the record-breaker in his special online-only feature about the hurricane’s destructive strength. Davis explains how the “once-in-a-thousand-year” storm struck only six years after Florence, the state’s previous “once-in-a-thousand-year” weather event.

Also in the new issue:

Hurricane season continues through November, and “The Guide to Coastal Living” offers strategies and tips for before and after major storms.

Bland Simpson recounts his boyhood experience of Hazel, 70 years after the hurricane left wreckage across much of the NC coast.

Jacques Cousteau’s grandson is building the “International Space Station of the Ocean,” and his PROTEUS™ Project is coming to the NC Coastal Conference.

Researchers and community members join forces to fight plastic pollution in North Carolina.

Satellite tagging on Bald Head Island reveals that loggerhead sea turtles cover long distances up and down the East Coast — and beyond.

A new project developes a novel solution for mapping the impacts of North Carolina’s poultry industry.

“Hook, Line & Science” tells how scientists discover a global phenomenon — shrinking fish — but the reasons behind it aren’t clear cut.

NC Stream Watch has designed indoor-outdoor classrooms for K-6 students.

And, as always, “Mariner’s Menu” offers new local seafood recipes tailored for the season, including these favorites for Fall: butter shrimp, grilled tuna, southern crab cakes, and sautéed flounder amandine.

As western North Carolina begins to recover from Hurricane Helene, Coastwatch will continue to report on the story. The next issue of Coastwatch will be available in January online only, and all issues are available here
