COASTWATCH WRITERS AND EDITORS NET NEW AWARDS Lauren D. Pharr — avian ecologist, co-founder of Field Inclusive, and Coastwatch contributing editor — has earned a 2023 NC Governor’s Conservation Achievement Award. Melody Hunter-Pillion has won a national APEX Award for Publication Excellence for “From Hurricane Hazel to the Morning Light,” her interview with shrimper Harry Bryant in the Summer 2022 issue. India Mackinson took first place in journalism from the Science Communicators of North Carolina for “The Mystery Ship Off Pappy Lane” from the Spring 2023 issue. And Dan DiNicola, Coastwatch’s science and digital media editor, has won a journalism award from the Science Communicators of North Carolina for “An Angler-Inspired Approach: How Descending Devices Can Save North Carolina’s Reef Fish,” which appeared in our inaugural all-digital issue.
